These figures come directly from the Yoken Sacco Credit Policy adopted 19 May 2022 and effective 1 June 2022. All loan interest is charged on a reducing balance, which means you pay interest only on what you still owe — not on the original amount.

What a Ksh 50,000 emergency need actually costs Yoken figure calculated from our published 1.25% per month reducing-balance rate over 12 months plus the 2.5% processing fee. Digital lender costs vary by provider, tenor and customer; always confirm current pricing with the provider before comparing.
Source of fundsHow the cost is charged
Yoken emergency loan1.25% per month on a reducing balance, 12 months, plus a one-off 2.5% processing fee that already includes insurance, CRB and legal charges. Approved in 5 working days.
Yoken normal loan1.15% per month on a reducing balance, up to 60 months, no ceiling, 2.5% all-inclusive fee. The cheapest money we lend.
Typical mobile app loanCharged as a flat fee on the full amount for a 7 to 30 day term, then rolled over. Because the fee does not reduce as you repay, the effective annual cost is many times a reducing-balance rate.
Bank personal loanPriced off the bank's base rate plus a margin, with arrangement and insurance fees charged separately.

Why "reducing balance" is the number that matters

A flat rate charges interest on the whole amount you borrowed for the whole term, even after you have repaid most of it. A reducing-balance rate charges interest only on the outstanding balance, which falls every month. Two loans quoted at the same percentage are not the same loan. Every Yoken loan except the one-off dividend discounting loan is charged on a reducing balance. Ask any other lender to state, in writing, which method they use.

Why members stay

A Sacco you own, not a lender you owe.

When you save with Yoken you become a part-owner. The surplus comes back to you as interest on deposits and dividends on shares — it does not leave Embu.

🌱

8% on your deposits

We paid 8% interest on member deposits in FY2021, against an industry floor of 5%. In 2020 it was 9%.

⚖

Members decide

Nine directors elected by members, supervised by a three-person supervisory committee. Our 2022 AGM was the 34th.

🔒

Insured against the worst

If a member dies while repaying a loan that is not in default, the insurer settles the principal balance. Your family does not inherit the debt.

Members earn from the Sacco and from Ushirika Ltd — our shop, hotel, butchery, dairy and garden businesses.

If a loan falls into arrears, here is exactly what happens

A loan is in default once an instalment is unpaid for 30 days, and arrears attract a 2% monthly penalty. At 30 days we write to the borrower and copy the guarantors. At 60 days a second letter follows. At 90 days recovery begins from the guarantors and the member is listed with the credit reference bureaus; approved debt collectors may be engaged with board approval. We share credit information with CRBs at all times — positive as well as negative. We would rather you call us before day 30.

About Yoken Sacco

Forty members in 1986. A Ksh 71 million balance sheet today.

Yoken Savings and Credit Co-operative Society Limited was started in 1986 by employees of the company then called Yoder Kenya Limited, and was formally registered on 29 December 1986 with forty members. The company is today Fides Kenya Ltd, a flower-growing business in Mbeere South that exports flower cuttings, and it remains the heart of our membership.

We are licensed by the Ministry of Co-operative Development and Enterprise to provide Back Office Service Activity (BOSA) to members, and we are registered under the Co-operative Societies Act. Yoken Sacco has been an approved credit information provider with the Central Bank of Kenya since November 2016.

Our common bond is now open. Membership has extended beyond Fides to welfare groups, chamas, group accounts and business people across Embu County. In 2022 we held our 34th Annual General Meeting and adopted a Strategic Plan running to 2025, with a stated target of 1,500 members and a Ksh 96 million loan book.

Members also own Ushirika Ltd, our investment arm, which runs a shop, a hotel and butchery, a dairy and a garden. These trade at affordable prices for members and return a second dividend.

Our vision

To be a secure, leading financial institution in the provision of financial services and products to members and the community within Dummen Orange in Kenya and its environs.

Our mission

To attract and retain employees of Dummen Orange in Kenya and the community by offering effective, efficient and reliable financial services and products which not only meet but exceed their expectations.

Core values: Professionalism · Integrity · Creativity & Innovation · Team Work · Unity of Purpose · Respect to all · Effective Corporate Governance

Questions members actually ask

Straight answers, with the numbers in them.

If your question is not here, call +254 710 671 822 — we answer by the third ring.

How do I join Yoken Sacco?

You need to be introduced by an existing Yoken Sacco member. Bring a copy of your national ID, a completed membership form and Ksh 200 as the registration fee. You then buy share capital of Ksh 4,200 (210 shares at Ksh 20 each), which may be paid in instalments but must be complete within six months, and you commit to saving at least Ksh 1,200 every month. Employees of Fides Kenya Ltd, and their spouses and children aged 18 and over, can join directly without an introducer.

What is the Yoken Sacco M-Pesa paybill number?

The Yoken Sacco paybill number is 400222. For the account number, enter 77928# followed by your member number and then the letter code for the account you are paying: S for shares, D for normal savings, M for Mwanangu savings, FD for fixed deposit, N for a normal loan, B for a business loan, E for an emergency loan, F for a school fees loan and SL for a smart loan. A member with number 001 paying share capital would enter 77928#001S.

How much can I borrow from Yoken Sacco?

For a normal or development loan you can borrow up to three times your savings, and there is no upper ceiling on the amount. A business loan is 2.5 times your savings up to Ksh 5,000,000. Emergency loans go up to Ksh 50,000, school fees loans up to Ksh 100,000, and smart asset-finance loans up to Ksh 50,000. Your total loan deductions cannot exceed two thirds of your basic pay, and the loan must be repaid before you reach retirement age.

What interest rate does Yoken Sacco charge on loans?

Normal and business loans are charged at 1.15% per month on a reducing balance. Emergency and school fees loans are 1.25% per month on a reducing balance. The smart asset-finance loan is 15% per year on a reducing balance. Instant and mobile loans are 10% per month on a reducing balance. The dividend discounting loan carries a 10% one-off charge deducted upfront. A processing fee of 2.5% applies to normal and emergency loans and already includes insurance, CRB and legal charges.

How long does Yoken Sacco take to approve a loan?

An emergency loan is approved within 7 days (5 working days for processing). A normal loan takes up to 30 days. School fees and smart loans are processed within 15 days. The dividend discounting loan takes 5 days. Instant and mobile loans are processed immediately, and an e-loan can be requested instantly over the phone.

How long must I save before I can borrow?

You must complete six months of active membership before you qualify for a normal loan. Emergency and mobile loans require only three months. If you boost your savings with a lump sum, that boost is only considered for lending purposes after three months. A member who withdraws and later rejoins is treated as a new member for loan purposes.

How much interest does Yoken Sacco pay on my savings?

Yoken Sacco paid 8% interest on member deposits in the 2021 financial year, 9% in 2020 and 8.6% in 2019. The regulatory and industry minimum is 5%, so we have consistently paid above it. Interest on deposits and dividends on shares are paid within four months of the end of the financial year, directly into your bank account. We do not pay dividends in cash.

Do I need guarantors for a Yoken Sacco loan?

Yes, for most products. A normal loan and an emergency loan each require three guarantors, a smart loan requires two, and an instant loan requires one. All guarantors must be members of the Sacco. A school fees loan can be secured by a guarantor or by your own savings. The dividend discounting loan requires no guarantors because it is recovered from your own dividend.

Can a chama or a company join Yoken Sacco?

Yes. A chama pays a Ksh 1,000 membership fee, holds a minimum shareholding of Ksh 10,000, deposits at least Ksh 5,000 a month, must be legally registered with a certificate, must be able to raise a 20% deposit when requesting a loan, and must include at least one existing Yoken Sacco member. An SME pays Ksh 1,000 registration with Ksh 2,000 shareholding and Ksh 5,000 monthly. A corporate pays Ksh 2,000 registration with Ksh 20,000 shareholding and Ksh 5,000 monthly.

Is Yoken Sacco a deposit-taking Sacco with a FOSA?

No. Yoken Sacco is licensed by the Ministry of Co-operative Development and Enterprise to provide Back Office Service Activity (BOSA) only, and is registered under the Co-operative Societies Act. We do not operate a front office (FOSA) counter or offer current accounts. We are an approved credit information provider with the Central Bank of Kenya, listed since November 2016.

What happens if I fail to repay a Yoken Sacco loan?

A loan is considered in default once an instalment remains unpaid for 30 days, and the amount in arrears attracts a penalty of 2% per month. At 30 days we write to you and copy your guarantors. A second letter follows at 60 days. At 90 days recovery begins from your guarantors, you may be listed with the credit reference bureaus, and approved debt collectors may be engaged with board approval. If your savings exceed the outstanding balance, the loan is recovered from your savings. Please call us before you reach day 30.

What happens to my loan if I die?

If a member dies while repaying a loan that is not in default, the insurance company settles the outstanding principal balance once we notify them and submit the claim — your family does not inherit the loan. This cover is built into the 2.5% processing fee. If the loan was already in default at the time of death, it is recovered from the member's collateral and, if that is insufficient, from the guarantors. This is exactly why we ask every member to name next of kin and beneficiaries on the membership form.

Can I top up an existing loan?

Yes. To top up a normal loan you must have repaid it for at least six months; for an emergency loan, at least three months. A refinance fee of 5.5% is levied on the outstanding principal balance and the top-up is treated as a new loan that must be fully secured by guarantors. Smart loans and school fees loans cannot be refinanced.

How do I leave Yoken Sacco and get my money?

Complete a withdrawal form and give 60 days notice. Payment is made within 30 days after the notice expires, and a withdrawal fee of Ksh 1,000 applies. You can only withdraw if you have cleared your loans or your savings exceed your loan balance. If you have guaranteed another member's active loan, you cannot withdraw until you provide a replacement guarantor. Note that share capital is non-refundable.

Where are the Yoken Sacco offices and what are the contacts?

Our offices are at Mbeere South, Fides Kenya Ltd, Embu County. Post to P.O. Box 1175-60100, Embu, Kenya. Call +254 710 671 822 — we answer by the third ring. Email info@yokensacco.com, or yoken.sacco@gmail.com for deposit slips. Correspondence should be addressed to the General Manager.

Is a Sacco loan cheaper than a mobile app loan?

Compared on a like-for-like basis, yes — and the reason is the method, not just the number. Yoken charges 1.15% to 1.25% per month on a reducing balance, so interest is calculated only on what you still owe and falls every month. Mobile app lenders typically charge a flat fee on the full amount for a 7 to 30 day term and then roll it over, so the fee never reduces as you repay. Always ask any lender to state in writing whether the rate is flat or reducing balance, and what the total cost of credit will be.
